Subject: Premier & Gentle Leader Collars

Mahdi's new collars from DeJa'Vue came in the mail this week ( thanks for
the prompt service Rose!).
I ordered a Premier collar because mahdi was backing out of her buckle
collar and her neck size kept changing. A great side benefit is the ease
of getting it on her. All I have to do is slip it over her head, no
struggling while I get it buckled.
Mahdi also got a Gentle Leader ( promise collar). I had been using a Halti
but it was leaving a mark on her nose because she would drag her face across
the grass to try to get it off. I tried moleskin on the band but she really
hated that collar. The Gentle leader does not have such a stiff, structured
design and it fits differently across the nose. After the first few minutes
she got used to it and walked like an angel. I even took her to the vets
with it and she sat and behaved like a lady while he trimmed her nails. No
rearing up and trying to back out of the office. I took the girls to the
beach and usually they drag me all the way down to the water. The Gentle
Leader works so well a two year old could walk my 85# beast.
I have to say when I saw these collars mentioned on the list and when
everyone recommended the premier after mahdi escaped at Petsmart, I had
trouble imagining what they looked like. I also wasn't too sure that she
would take to the no pull collar after my experience with the halti.
Thankyou to everyone who recommended tham to me. Rose has all the colors
and donates a portion to rescue so if you have been thinking about ordering
one.........(the preceding is an unpaid endorsement <G>)

Subject: Premier Collars

After all the discussion on the list, I ordered a few Premier collars from
DeJa'Vue and they arrived this week. (I'll second the previous post on the
great service, Rose, thanks!) We really like the way they work, as Star is
quite adept at putting on her brakes and slipping out of her other collars.
She tried it when she had her new Premier collar on and was quite surprised to
find that she and the collar were still attached to me and the leash. (A side
benefit is the great color choices -- so much more appealing than the usual
pet store red-green-black-blue.)

Rose,
The Gentle Leaders are a life saver. I have dreaded walking my two girls at
the same time for a while, I'm not getting any younger OR stronger. It's such a
pleasure now to take them out together and show them off. No more being
pulled east and west at the same time!
I like having a large choice of colors too, people seem to be less likely to
think they are muzzles.
Thank you so much for the quick shipment, and especially for your
contribution to RR rescue.

Hey Carol!

Sounds like you are taking the right steps
in teaching Vali on leash walking. Some RR never need a GL, some do.
Mugabe doesn't wear one, but I have almost total control on him on lead (he
does wear a Premier collar). We went lure coursing today (his first
trial), he wasn't wearing one. BUT- his lightbulb is slowing getting
bright & he is learning that lure coursing is fun. If he does stop bouncing next
to me as he walks & decides to pull me to the line, I will put a GL on him!
And many of the RR DID wear GL as they walked around & when taken to the
line. It does make a difference in control.

A dog can easily switch from a GL to a regular collar. One of the
differences between the Halti & the Gentle Leader is just that. A Halti is
always a headcollar. You can't change the appearence. The Gentle leader
is a collar (around the neck) with a attached slip loop that goes around
the muzzle & after the dog learns not to pull, the loop is slipped off the
nose and the dog has a regular collar again. If they forget, or need that
extra contol, the loop is again pulled over the nose.

A Gentle Leader comes in simples sizes of petite, small, medium, large,
extra large. Most RR fit into a large, because of the large neck. Some of
the very petite RR do fit into a medium. They are adjustable. What many
people do is have their RR wear both a Premier (or a regular collar) &
their GL at the same time. The GL doesn't have a place to hang the ID tags
& for extra safety when walking.

I would suggest you get one for Vali, if you think she will be a normal(?)
Ridgeback that will be excited to lure course. Also it will help with her
heeling. It will teach her to be next to you, not ahead or behind. She
would not wear a GL for tracking or agility- since these allow almost total
freedom for the dog.

I don't think a dog is ever too young to start wearing one, that is after
they learn what a leash is & how to walk, not fight it! I have never seen
a age limit on them. Premier really believes in their Gentle Leader & have
recommendations from leading professionals worldwide. They make the Gentle
Leaders in 10 different colors and different sizes, a training
booklet, tee shirts promoting the GL, a 10ft. indoor remote control cord,
and a 13 minute video. I don't carry the extra stuff available, but I can
order them if you are interested in any of it.

I think I sorta covered the general outline of the Gentle Leader & answered
your questions. Feel free to ask any more as you think of them!

Subject: Gentle Leader Support Group

I've been using the Gentle Leader on my Rhodesian Ridgeback on-and-off for
almost 3 years. I had used a prong collar in the past, but he could still
pull with that on. Plus, I didn't like the idea of the prongs digging into
his neck.

The Gentle Leader doesn't hurt his neck at all, and it gives me much better
control over this strong dog! When he's wearing his Gentle Leader, our walks
are much more relaxed and enjoyable. And when we walk into the kennel club or
the vet's office, he isn't pulling and straining at the end of the leash -
he's walking like a well-behaved dog!

I started using a Gentle Leader when I went lure coursing with my dog. He
LOVES to course and gets EXTREMELY excited. Twice he has pulled me down and
dragged me to the starting line! I didn't want to get injured, so I started
using his Gentle Leader to take him to the line. Now I can walk to the line
relatively calmly without him straining and choking himself the entire way!

The Gentle Leader is a very different feel for the dogs and they should be
introduced to it slowly and with lots of treats! My dog will try to rub it
off for the first minute he has it on, so I tell him "no rub!" I've found the
best thing is to slowly introduce it to the dog and distract him with treats
or toys while he is wearing it. In time the dogs get used to the different
feel and they accept the Gentle Leader very nicely.

My dog's Gentle Leader doesn't have his tags attached to it, so he wears both
collars when we are out in public. As a safety precaution, I hook the leash
to both the Gentle Leader and his regular collar. I've seen dogs slip the
nose strap of the Gentle Leader off (because the owners didn't fit it
correctly!) but in that case the neck strap would still be on and hooked to
the leash so the dog couldn't get away.

I feel the Gentle Leader is the safest collar for my dog to wear. I teach
puppy classes at our kennel club and always encourage the puppy owners to get
a Gentle Leader. Puppies are sometimes too young to understand how to walk
calmly - they're so easily distracted! But some of the puppies are large
breed, strong dogs who need to be under control. And with a Gentle Leader,
even children can safely walk these big dogs!

A testimonial page would be a good idea. I don't mind if you post it with
my address or not. It is interesting that I have been trying to see a
gentle leader in person for 5 months now and never seen one. I go to a lot
of matches & dog places. Everyone talks about them though. My vet wants to
order one so I'll bring your www address to the office when I go in next
week. He said he hadn't seen on in so long he had forgotten about them.
He's very big in the local rottie rescue effort. And he has a soft spot for
rr's.

To Rose of DejaVue:

With all the recent discussion on the post about methods of dog training
and use of treats, I just wanted you to know that The World's Best
Treats for that special dog occasion were delivered today at my
doorstep. This is the second time I've ordered the teriyaki beef and
variety of biscuits from DejaVue, and Sunny (my now-slim and trim r.r.)
was in heaven. Ears forward and brow all furrowed -- he would have
followed any command to get what he knew was in the box.

So now I've stockpiled your special goodies and am eagerly awaiting the
arrival of my new puppy (from Sun Gatto's gorgeous litter ) to introduce
her to the Joy of Obedience! And I like knowing that part of the
revenue from my order goes toward r.r. rescue work.

(If anyone is wondering if I've tried these treats myself, the answer is
you bet!)

Which reminds me to ask: Can a dog back out of a Gentle Leader?...a Halti?

I'm thinking of one to walk Cheyenne to the line for Lure Coursing (poor
thing walks the entire way on her hind feet gasping for breath and that's
with a 3" wide firm leather neck piece which can't roll). But she does back
up...alot!!

No, they can't back out of it.....BUT, I don't think I'd use one for
coursing.
Kylie also goes to the line in that fashion! Through the years I have tried
a Halti, (she could just "tilt" her head out of it), a no-pull harness, (she
rubbed the inside of her front legs raw), holding her lead in one hand and
her ear in the other (that works ok but I hate doing it and she can still
throw me)
I think that these dogs that are so "bunny crazy" could hurt themselves
badly without even knowing it, they are SO focused on where they are going
and what they are going to do. I just feel that the lunging, jumping and
twisting -with a purpose- isn't the atmosphere the Gentle Leader was meant
for.
Besides, isn't the anticipation one of the fun parts of any enjoyable
activity? ;-}
I've finally decided to lean back as far as I can, and HANG ON.

Cherie: As long as the strap around the neck is snug, I don't think a dog
could ever back out of a gentle leader. If the nose strap is too loose, I've
seen dogs slip this off, but then they are still attached to the leash by the
neck strap.

I ALWAYS use a gentle leader to walk Kinga to and from the line at coursing
(and he often stops suddenly and pulls backwards). Unless my husband is along
to carry him, that's the only way I can control him by myself! I don't like
to see the dogs gasping for breath on the way to the line because that's
limiting their oxygen and their muscles need that oxygen to run.

So, yes, try a gentle leader. I think you will be amazed at the amount of
control you have with it. And don't forget to order it from our list member,
Rose, so rescue benefits too!

Hi Cherie,

My girl Nadra, who is definately the most driven lure coursing fool in my
house,
started pulling so hard at coursing a year or so ago that she would faint.
Very
stressful thing to have you dog collapse on the way to the field! So I
used the
promise halti, which I think is the same thing as the gentle leader, to
walk her
to the line while leaving her slip lead on her neck. That way I could have the
slip lead ready to go and just drop the halti. Worked like a charm. I would
try it using both.

Just to clear up a confusion here. The "Promise" headhalter is now called
"Gentle Leader". Premier Pet Products is the manufacturer. The Halti is a
different head collar made by Safari Pet Products. These are 2 different
types of headware. The Halti can be purchased almost anywhere. The Gentle
Leader can only be purchased from Premier distributors, veterinarians,
trainers & adoption organizations. The reason for this is because of the
extreme importance of a proper fit & instructions, these people would be
available "hands on" training with use of the Gentle Leader if needed.

(Of course I cannot do "hands on" training with everyone here on the
newsgroup. But what I am developing is a "support group" of Ridgeback
owners who do use the Gentle Leader on their dogs. Also with the Premier
collars if anyone needs help or questions.)

By the way, I am not affliated with her company or getting any $$ for this.

First, Thanks to Rose for prompt friendly service! And when she says Blaze
Orange, she *means* BLAZE!
Second, am trying to follow directions for fitting and acclimating Jessi to
the GL - short periods in the house, easy, short walks, etc. She is showing
some resistance to it yet, still pawing at it after 3 days of on and off
wearing. By my interpretation of the instructions, it is properly fitted.
Could I get some feedback from those with Gentle Leader experience?? Also
have a couple of folk inquiring about it for their dogs, so I won't trim it
to fit Jessi until they've had a chance to try it. One testee will be an
Akita. Jessi is *very* responsive to the halter when on a leash, which is
part of what I was looking for so my Mom - not rock-solid on her feet - can
walk her, not go for a drag.
Thanks, too, Rose, for your extra donation to RTF over and above your

and from natural ingredients! Also, 10% of my order's cost went to ridgeback
rescue and another 5% when to the RTF. The collars are so far not as popular
as the treats, although Red is starting to get used to his and it really works
to prevent pulling in a more gentle way than using a prong. Red tends to pull
only when we are going to one of his classes, such as agility or obedience,
where he has lots of doggy friends and people friends who give him treats.
Molly is the one who really needs a Gentle Leader, but we haven't tried hers

Hi Rose,

Here I am, back in Austin after a kinda hectic two months up in
Pittsburgh helping my daughter with her new baby. I wanted you to know
how big a HIT some of your products made in my family (both dog and
human...) over the holidays. First of all, those two holiday baskets I
ordered, which you sent to two separate addresses, were the perfect
touch to make our extended family of six dogs and their parents feel
remembered while I was gone. Thank you so much for the huge baskets
(which we kept for decorative purposes) and all those goodies packed
inside them. They provided plenty of special treats to pass out to
our canines for quickie rewards for good behavior-- not to mention
something tasty to keep them from getting too interested in my
grandchildren's toys! Please keep these baskets available, as I'm sure
I'll be ordering more for holiday occasions this year. And -- I'm so
glad you could send me the buttons of all the dogs, as well as making
buttons of the faces of each of my four grandchildren!! They were so
delighted to see their granny wearing their faces on her dress -- every
day they were visiting!! I may have a reputation for being an
eccentric grandma now, but I bet those kids will never forget their
special buttons. And just watch me wear my buttons of my beloved rr's
at the National Specialty next summer up in Colorado!!

Best regards,
Carol
